Striving Both the Idea and Business With Mr. Peter Tawipoljaroan, the Owner of Daddy Dough Doughnut
Mr. Peter Tawipoljaroan, a business owner of the delicious doughnut under the name Daddy Dough, is a young businessman who is only 29 years old, but has pushed his Thai doughnut to have the widespread fame. He’s been successful since the young age because he strived and dared to take risks. Let’s look at the concept and identity of this well-humored young man.
What do you think about yourself?
I am an easygoing guy, but the work is heavy, then I end up with the stress. But, when I knew that I started to overflow, I began to cut because it’s no good for my health. For example, right now Daddy Dough has 23 branches, and the latest one is at Future Park Rangsit. So my work schedule is overlapping but it’s my good opportunity. Whatever I could grab, I must do (laugh).
Talking the past story…
I had been an activist since Grade 6 – 12. I was in a marching band, also a cheering team’s chief (Saint Dominic School). When I was in the university, I became a student president. But I was not stressful. I felt relax, fun and happy. I graduated from the Travel Industry Management – Hotel Management at University of Hawaii. Before, I firstly chose studying the science – computer because I wanted to be a programmer. When I studied it for a while, it was not me. Then, I changed to study the Hotel Management instead since my home’s business is a restaurant and I could come back to develop it. But when I graduated, I became a software salesman. I had worked it for 2 years and started my Daddy Dough business.
The beginning of Daddy Dough
At that time, the people had to line up very long to buy a bun at Rotiboy in Thailand. My father wondered how they could do. At first, I must tell you that my family has always run the restaurant and bakery business named “Maria” and has the branches at Silom and Ratchaphruek. Then, my father said the people had to line up very long to buy a doughnut at US. also. He asked if we would try, and I agreed. When we did it, many people asked if someone would buy, and if it worked. But I would like to try my best first. If it’s unsuccessful, I could accept. But an area wasn’t a problem at that time because we used the restaurant’s area. When I could sell it, I divided the area seriously.
Try just once so there would be no regret.
My difference was if it’s good to do, and if I could compete with the big brands. At that time, I was 24 years old, but one idea passed through: “Try it just once”. If it failed, it’s okay because I was just 24 – 25 years old and still had lots of chances to find the jobs. I solely thought that I could learn and no regrets with the fail because I already tried it. At that time, I heavily considered because I was being very successful with my salesman career. But I was confident if we did it fullest, we should be successful. Therefore, I quitted and fully did my doughnut business.
Manage it by ourselves, better than others
Yes, I had written my business plan by myself and I had to change it for 7 months. I hired some team to help out on the brand personality and I wrote many business plans. If I didn’t write it well, I dropped it. If we had some money to hire someone to write it all, we would know it a little. When we didn’t have the money to hire, we would be able to do nothing.
How do you solve the problems?
(Smile) I use the dharma. I must have the consciousness all the time. Everything occurs by its own reason that means our lives have the up and down. Although the bad things would happen, I believed that it would be relieved by doing the goodness. Since the problem is like a trial from the almighty which I must pass and solve it successfully. If I felt stressed with the problem, I might go to visit my friends or listen to the music. If I felt so stressed, I would drive to Hua Hin. That is my settler. Just drive for a sniff of sea and that’s enough. I love Hua Hin very much since in the past, my grandmother often took me there. When I smelt the sea’s odor, looked for something to eat in a market and drove back home, I could normally work in the morning.
Your Definition of Success
I separate the success in the business and in the life. I must give the equal importance to both 2 sides. In the business, it must gain the profits, become sustainable and grow by its own. The profits will be brought to expand the business and extend the branches. Just think about getting a chance to do the test with passing the test, I compared that everyone got the chance to do it, but how many people would be able to pass it? I supposed that you were working so hard to achieve, but your family life was separated, no time each other. It’s getting the chance to do the test, but fails. Life must balance. If we were tired or stressful, just rest and take care of our health. I agree with Work Smart rather than Work Hard. If my subordinates came to work at 7:00 a.m. and finish at 11:00 p.m., I would not be happy. How we work fully and worth the time, we could see it at the result. It’s the Work Smart and we are successful in our lives. In conclusion, working happily, having the balance in the life and having the time for the parents and families.
Distinctive point of Daddy Dough
Our doughnuts are made of good quality raw materials, with more 20 ingredients. Our doughnut dough recipe has been improved more than 30 times until now. My father, younger brother and I have helped to improve and talked with our suppliers to gain the knowledge and develop our dough. I thought if the dough was bad but the chocolate was very good, it ends. But when the dough is good and we use the good chocolate, our doughnuts are more distinctive.
